On the morning of November 24, 2012, prisoners of the correctional colony No. 6 in Kopeysk, Russia, climbed onto the rooftops of the prison to protest peacefully against the torture and racketeering practices that were in place in the prison. Though the investigation led by several independent bodies and NGOs established the massive, systematic and flagrant violation of detainees’ rights, 17 participants of the protest were sentenced to up to 5 years of prison for “mass riots” while the perpetrators of torture enjoy a great deal of impunity.
